Rebound! Big Three turnaround battle! Will the 76ers be better?
3:30pm, 20 October 2025【Basketball】
24 wins and 58 losses, this is the report card handed over by the 76ers last season.

Behind this report card, Philadelphia spent four years and 212 million to sign George to form a Big Three combination aiming to compete for the championship. As a result, the Big Three only lasted 15 games this season. After 15 games, an expected strong team in the Eastern Conference was abruptly destroyed by injuries.
After spending a lot of money, this record is really embarrassing.
Although things went wrong, the 76ers, who entered the offseason again, still did not give up on strengthening. They won the No. 3 overall pick Edgcomb in the draft, and picked up shooter Johnny Bloom in the second round; they successively renewed the contracts of veterans Lowry and Gordon in the free market, and signed another With Watford, Justin Edwards, Jabari Walker and other players,
overall, the 76ers' paper strength in the new season is not bad. The only problem may be the frontcourt position. Compared with the previous season, the height of the lineup has shrunk significantly.

In the same position, last season's 76ers accumulated Harris, Reid, Batum, Embiid and others, forming a frontcourt team that can be called the league's top level. In December last season, with Embiid healthy and George playing at full attendance, the 76ers only lost three games in a single month. And once the dual core fell, the team's defense was instantly in a mess.
Faced with the crazy wave of injuries, Coach Nurse simply gave it a try in the second half of last season. After fully using the new players, he unexpectedly got a lot of surprises:
Edwards was undrafted. He was ignored in the University of Kentucky and was ignored by many parties in NBA physical examinations. Instead, he broke out in Philadelphia. At the end of last season, he averaged 14.5 points per game with a 56% shooting rate. The management did not hesitate to offer a three-year contract early to retain this lottery ticket.
After Edwards, the next surprise was Grimes, who was traded from the Mavericks. He averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 28 games. This kind of performance is definitely worthy of a big contract.

But the problem is that the team's backcourt rotation is slightly crowded in the new season. Veterans such as Maxey, Lowry, and Gordon, and newcomers such as McCain and Edgecombe all need time. Once Grimes is renewed, other newcomers will need to step aside.
This has also become the biggest problem for the 76ers this offseason.
Speaking of this, I have to mention Maxi, who was the most tenacious last season.
After Harden left the team, Maxey immediately took over the team's control, and his personal usage rate skyrocketed. However, throughout the season, the increase in ball ownership resulted in an increase in turnover rates, a decrease in three-point shooting percentage, and a personal plus-minus value also dropped from +4.7 to -3.8.
But from behind this, this is not because his offense has become worse, but more because he is forced to support the entire team's offensive load, and now he does not have such ability. In the past, Harden fed and connected the ball, and he was only responsible for breakthroughs and shooting; but now he needs to organize, break through, and finish by himself, and the difficulty of the game is completely different.
With his current performance, Maxi is more like a combo guard and is not suitable for controlling the ball throughout the game. But we still can't ignore his explosive power and the lethality of instantaneous breakthroughs. Looking across the league, it is difficult to find anyone who can compare with him.

It is foreseeable that Nurse will most likely continue to have him as the core in the new season. After Embiid and George return to the team, Maxey will return to his second scoring position. By then, we may expect his offensive efficiency to pick up.
This question also falls to Coach Nurse.
Although he was once criticized, judging from his resume, after losing Leonard, he forcibly relied on the defensive system to bring the Raptors to the forefront of the league. No matter how good the team's defense is, someone still needs to put the ball into the basket to score and win the game.
Looking at Philadelphia's lineup, there are basically not many stable scoring points except Maxey. Therefore, for the new season, Nurse is likely to continue the speed-up style of last season, switching around the explosive speed of Maxey and Edgecombe, and speeding up the pace of the game. On the one hand, it will cover up shortcomings in positional warfare, and on the other hand, it will also allow newcomers to grow smoothly at a fast pace.
Once the two stars return, the 76ers will once again adjust the distribution of ball rights. George will be responsible for organizing the connection and Embiid will contain the inside. This may be Maxi's most ideal team environment.

For the 76ers in the new season, their direction is actually clear enough. When all members return to the team healthy, Embiid, George, and Maxey will still be the core team, and the newcomers will make up for the team's shortcomings.
From the perspective of the role lineup, the newly signed Watford and Jabari Walker are extremely cost-effective roles. After Edwards renews his contract, if Grimes successfully stays with the team, the team's rotation depth will also be greatly improved.
Considering that Embiid and George may not be able to play smoothly at the beginning of the new season, Nurse may still need some lineup experiments, but this may also be a good thing. The young players in the team can grow up early. When the two main players return, this will be a new team that is mature and complete enough.
Unsurprisingly, last season's 76ers were indeed dismal, but they also gave Philadelphia a chance to reset. After the offseason, the 76ers at least began to gradually clarify their direction. They may not necessarily be able to enter the top half of the Eastern Conference in the new season, but they are by no means as at the mercy of last season.
