Tyron Lu, from superstar background board to champion coach

6:21pm, 3 July 2025【Basketball】

Everyone should be familiar with Tyron Lu, a small point guard who walked from a superstar background board to the championship coach. I still hesitated for a moment when writing about Tyron Lou. As the head coach, he is undoubtedly a big shot, but as a player, he is indeed a small shot.

Tyronn Lue, 6 feet tall (183 cm), plays as a point guard (PG). He was born in May 1977 in Mexico Town, Odraine County, north-central Missouri, USA (‌Mexico, only a city name and has nothing to do with the United States of Mexico). He was produced by the University of Nebraska. He was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 23rd pick in the first round of the 1998 NBA Draft. He was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers and started his NBA career. He played for seven teams, including the Lakers, Wizards, Magic, Rockets, Hawks, Mavericks (now known as the Mavericks), and the Bucks. He followed the Los Angeles Lakers for two consecutive seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers to win the NBA championship. In his NBA career in less than 11 seasons, Tyron Lu played 554 games in the regular season, including 173 starts, averaging 22.7 minutes per game, scoring 8.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.02 blocks. He played in a total of 21 games in the playoffs, but failed to get the opportunity to start. He averaged 8.1 minutes per game, scoring 2.3 points, 0.6 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.05 blocks.

As a light-weight point guard, Tyron Lu can use dribble to dribble his opponent, then pass or shoot directly, have certain breakthrough ability and have certain mid- and long-range shooting ability. It is not particularly outstanding, but it can still provide firepower support to the team from the outside. But he is short after all, and his height disadvantage makes him easily targeted by his opponents on the defensive end, and his assist and turnover ratio is not ideal, his defensive ability is limited, and his defensive level is at a medium-lower level in the NBA.

Although Tyron Lu's career is an absolute little figure, it is exciting enough. He used to play against the finals as a Cavalier. Although he was also fooled and turned into a background board, he left behind famous NBA scenes. He once won the championship trophy with the OK combination of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal. Michael Jordan, who also danced for the last time, was a teammate, and he also had some brilliant highlights.

On June 6, 2001 local time in the first NBA Finals, the Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Philadelphia 76ers at home 101:107. Tyron Lu played for 22 minutes, scoring 5 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists and 1 block, and gave the highest 5 steals in a single game in the NBA on the stage of the finals. On March 26, 2004, in the Orlando Magic's loss to the Indiana Pacers at 92:107 at home, Tyron Lu started for 38 minutes, made 13 of 19 shots (including 2 of 3 three-pointers), and made 4 free throws, scoring the highest single-game 32 points in NBA career, plus 1 rebound, 3 assists and 1 steal. On April 11, 2005, local time, in the Atlanta Hawks lost to the Charlotte Bobcats (now known as the Charlotte Hornets) at 105:110 overtime at home, Tyron Lu started for 42 minutes, scored 18 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals, and sent out the highest 14 assists in a single game in NBA career. On April 17, 2005, in the Atlanta Hawks' 139:135 overtime away game, Tyron Lu started for 37 minutes, making 10 of 14 shots (including 2 of 2 three-pointers), and making 10 free throws, scoring the highest single-game 32 points in NBA career, plus 1 rebound, 6 assists and 1 steal.

After the end of the 2008-2009 season, Tyron Lu officially announced his retirement and started his coaching career in the same year. Everyone knows the story since then. In October 2009, he was invited to become the head of basketball development for the Boston Celtics. In 2011, Doug Rivers was invited to join the Los Angeles Clippers coaching team as an assistant coach, and in 2014, he joined Ke. The coaching staff of the Levelland Cavaliers serves as assistant coach. In January 2016, the Cavaliers fired the team's head coach David Blatt, and chief assistant coach Tyron Lu took over as head coach. He also made a super reversal from 1:3 to 4:3 in the finals and became the fifth rookie coach in NBA history to lead the team to win the championship. In August 2019, he was invited by Doug Rivers to join the Los Angeles Clippers coach as an assistant coach. He has been the head coach of the Clippers since 2020.
