Unstoppable Steps — Richard Hamilton
8:52pm, 31 May 2025【Basketball】
In today's small ball league, mid-range jump shots have become a gradually lost skill, whether it is an emergency stop or a backward jump shot, whether it is a teammate or not.
Of course, this is a necessary scoring method, but as explained by modern basketball, a mid-range jumper may be the lowest-efficient shooting choice. Players should attack the basket as much as possible, otherwise they will all attack outside the three-point line. In terms of the expected scoring value of each shot, a mid-range jumper is the lowest-efficient choice.
Looking at the entire NBA, even many scoring players have good mid-range skills, but being able to add this technology to the running cover and free-ball cut will eventually become my own unique standard, and even the benchmark of the entire league, I will instantly think of a person, Richard Hamilton, the scoring champion of the Detroit Pistons during the Five Tigers period.
"The trick to running without a ball is to understand the position of the teammates, plus the speed change"
"Also, don't stay in the same place for more than 2 seconds"
This is Hamilton. He has the genes of a sprinter. There are many experts in running competitions at home. For Hamilton, his favorite sports are of course also running. He wakes up in the morning and runs in the morning, and runs before and after the race. On the court, he is like a sports car that does not run out of fuel at all. He bypasses the cover again and again, goes around from the bottom corner to the top of the arc and then cuts to the penalty area.
Each opponent who fights the Detroit Pistons has to face a suffocating defense on the offensive end, and also sends people to chase the athletic player on the defensive end.
Hamilton had already shown a very high basketball talent when he was young. He was selected for the McDonald's All-American High School Star Game. Compared with the good school subjects from Philadelphia, he entered the prestigious Connie Digu University in the University of the prestigious Connie Digu University, twice won the Best Player and Best Team in the Big East League. In 1999, he led Connie Digu to the championship and won the Most Valuable Player.
was finally selected by the Washington Wizards with the seventh pick in the first round. The Wizards were in an embarrassing stage of reconstruction. After the management cleared the players one after another, Hamilton began to reuse with 18.1 points per game in the second season, and broke through the 20-point average mark in the third season.
This basketball boy showed his scoring talent in the Wizards, but the team was seeking to break through the record bottleneck at that time. Considering Hamilton's single offensive means and the way of playing that requires a large number of teammates to cooperate, the Wizards chose to trade him to the Pistons in exchange for two All-Stars, with their independent offensive ability far better than the former.
For this decision at that time, many people could not understand how the Pistons gave up all the main players in the team in exchange for a kid who seemed to be weak. However, under the system of Pistons coach Carlisle, Hamilton gradually found his positioning and gave the Detroit Pistons the strongest scoring support. His backcourt partner with Billups also became one of the most comprehensive backcourt combinations in the league at that time.
Especially in 2004, Hamilton was the Pistons' scoring champion throughout the season. In the finals, facing the Lakers with four historical stars, he averaged 21.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4 assists per game, perfectly playing the offensive arrow in the Pistons' basketball team. His partner Billups and Prince became the team's perimeter chain, reducing Kobe's threat as much as possible, allowing the latter to score a lowest average of 22.6 points in the 2004 playoffs, as well as a shooting percentage of 38.1% and a three-point shooting percentage of 17.4%.
Since that time, Hamilton has become famous and was selected as the All-Star three times in a row between 2006 and 2008. His running and mid-range jump shots are not gorgeous, but they are one of the league's most deadly scoring weapons. The Pistons also entered the Eastern Conference Finals for six consecutive seasons from 2003-08, which is a rather difficult achievement. However, after losing to the Heat in the 2006 Eastern Conference Finals, Ben Wallace chose to leave the Pistons to join the Bulls. The former Five Pistons Tigers became history. Even though they continued to strengthen later, with Chris Webber and others to help, they also selected fresh blood such as Rodnistaki, but faced James' Cavaliers, the Celtics' Big Three, and Howard's magic one after another.
Finally, at the beginning of 2009, Joe Dumas decided to trade Billups in exchange for the answer Iverson, seeking a glimmer of hope for the team's change.
Hamilton, who lost his old partner Billups, was still a little uncomfortable. The Pistons interrupted the Eastern Conference Final record that season and was swept out by the Eastern leader Cavaliers in the first round. Then Iverson and Rashad Wallace left one after another, and the Pistons entered the reconstruction stage since then.
The Pistons during the reconstruction period were quite struggling, and the strengthened players' combat effectiveness was not as expected. There were even reports of conflicts between coaches and players. Hamilton's health began to decline. The number of appearances in the next two seasons was only 46 and 55. After the 2011 season, Hamilton chose to sign the Chicago Bulls, ending his nine-year career in Motor City. After two seasons, he chose to leave the arena and hang his jersey in 2013.
In February 2017, Hamilton's jersey retirement ceremony was held at Auburn Hills Palace Stadium. As soon as he entered the court, he could no longer control his excitement. Seeing his former family and friends and Pistons teammates attending grandly, Hamilton was already in tears before he even took the stage.
"All this is unreal. I have a piece of cardboard since I was a child, and I have written all the goals that I can do my best to achieve. I wrote that I want to play in the NBA, I want to win the NCAA championship, I want to win the NBA championship, but I didn't write that my jersey would be honorably retired. I never thought of it."
Looking back at Hamilton now, I often see him on the anchor show. The athlete with a big bald head still looks full of energy and enjoys his retirement life. I often show off my family’s life moments.
For Hamilton, his family was the most important spiritual pillar, just like in the past, he was also the most important mainstay of the city of Detroit..
Just like he said:
"The most important stage of children's growth is before they were 10 years old. I had a good opportunity to have a good player career, a good coach, a good teammate, a championship and everything good. But now it's time to dedicate my life to my family. My family makes my life more special, and make the decision to retire simple, so that they know that their father is a great basketball player."
has been running all his career, and Hamilton ran his glory in Detroit, and on the new track called life, he is still moving forward non-stop.
