Barcelona striker Ferran Torres has undergone appendicitis surgery, the club has confirmed it.

Torres scored a hat-trick assist in Krasico's win over Real Madrid on Sunday, putting Barcelona on the verge of locking in the La Liga title of the season, but has since been knocked out by illness and successfully undergoing surgery on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old is now recovering and is expected to miss the rest of the season. It's only ten days before the final round of La Liga, but Barcelona can win the championship in a city derby that beat Espanyol on Thursday night.

The La Liga champions were almost theirs on Wednesday until Real Madrid won 2-1 against Mallorca, with unexpected stoppage time goalkeeper Jacob Ramon scoring the winning goal.

Torres has only started 12 La Liga games this season, three of which are Champions League games, but his role in the team is important. The former Manchester City player is usually the first choice for all three positions on the forward line, and is the initial cover point for Robert Lewandowski, Lamin Yamal and Rafinia, which has brought him a total of 45 appearances.

Among them, Torres scored a very considerable 19 goals in various competitions. Perhaps his most notable performance since last weekend's match against Krasico was in the 4-2 reversal against Atletico Madrid in March, when he came off the bench twice in the 67th minute. The recovery after the appendectomy can take about a few weeks, meaning Torres had already had a good rest at the start of the preseason against Barcelona in July.
