Former England international Townsend switched to the Thai League and joined the 16th club in his career

Former England international and former Premier League team Andros Townsend recently completed an unexpected transfer - he officially joined the Thai League promoted Ganchanabry Electric, which marks the 16th club he played in his career.

The 34-year-old midfielder chose to join after the team successfully advanced to the Thai Super League last season. Although he spent most of this summer participating in the broadcast of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup as a commentator, he obviously does not intend to retire and will continue to wear the No. 25 jersey to compete in the arena.

The official news of the transfer was released in a rare way: posted by club president Prawat Kithammakunnit on his personal Facebook homepage. Townsend also made his symbolic debut in a new jersey at the famous River Kwai Bridge, a historic landmark in Ganchanabury Province, about 150 kilometers from Bangkok.

Ganchanaburi Electric Power was established in 2017. Although it is a young team, it has been renamed three times in just eight years, from the original "Lion King Golden Bell" to "Longpaduwanganchanaburi", and finally named it as its current name. Although the team has not been established for a long time, the club is making its mark in the Thai Super League through a series of eye-catching signings.

This signing is not an isolated case. The club has also signed several powerful international players, including former Fulham striker Abubakar Kamala, Luxembourg international Kherson Rodriguez and Algerian central defender Mehdi Talat.

It is worth mentioning that Townsend Sr. will be printed behind the new team's jersey to distinguish it from his son, Andros Townsend Jr. The latter is also currently considered to be following in his father's footsteps and embarking on the path of professional football.

Before landing in Thailand, Townsend's career spanned many well-known clubs in England, including Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Everton, and most recently, Luton Town (2023/24 season). In addition, he has played briefly in Antalya Sports, Türkiye, and made 23 appearances last season.

Townsend made 13 appearances for the England national team between 2013 and 2016, and scored as soon as he made his national team debut against Montenegro in the World Cup qualifiers. He has since scored a goal against San Marino and scored a stunning long-range shot in a friendly against Italy in 2015.

Now 34 years old, Andros Townsend's football journey has not come to an end. This time, he chose to start a new chapter in his life in the distant and potential Thai League.
