If Alonso coaches Real Madrid, it will be difficult for him to exceed one season, just because of his three insurmountable disadvantages!

As the La Liga approaches its end, Ancelotti's coaching time at Real Madrid seems to have entered the countdown. Therefore, domestic and foreign media have predicted that Leverkusen's coach Xavi Alonso is very likely to take over Real Madrid's coach this summer. In response, Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carlo also publicly stated: "We have a gentleman agreement with Alonso - if the clubs he has played for (Real Madrid, Liverpool, Bayern) send an invitation, we will not set up obstacles." If Alonso really coaches Real Madrid next season, he is very likely to persist until the end of the season. This is by no means alarmist, but is determined by the three insurmountable disadvantages.

Alonso led Leverkusen to win the first Bundesliga championship in the team's history. Alonso has little coaching experience and cannot control the Real Madrid locker room. Alonso became the head coach of Real Madrid U14 in 2018, and took over Real Sociedad B, which was the Bundesliga B in 2019 (Spain third-tier league). In October 2022, he was appointed as the head coach of the team by Leverkusen Football Club in Bundesliga. In the 2023-24 season, Alonso led Leverkusen to win the first Bundesliga championship in team history. Despite this, Alonso only coached in top league clubs for two and a half years, and Leverkusen is not a giant club. Therefore, Alonso not only has little coaching experience, but also has extremely lack of experience in commanding wealthy clubs. Some people may say that when Zidane took over Real Madrid's coaching experience for the first time, he was not as good as Alonso now. But don't forget that Zidane has been an assistant coach at Real Madrid, so he learned how to control a giant team. In addition, Zidane's fame and influence during his time as a player are incomparable to Alonso. With this, Zidane can suppress superstars such as Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema, Ramos, Modric, etc. in the locker room. Can Alonso hold down Mbappe, Vinicius, Bellingham, Rodrigo and others? I'm afraid it's difficult. If the locker room is out of control, the head coach will not be far from being dismissed.

The main lineup of Real Madrid next season is predicted by foreign media. Second, Alonso's usual tactical styles are not in line with Real Madrid players. Alonso is most commonly used in Leverkusen as the 3421 formation. Taking the 2023-24 season that won the championship as an example, the three central defenders are Inkapier, Jonatan Ta and Tapsoba, Grimaldo and Flynnpon are two wingbacks, Zachar and Andrich partner with two midfielders, Werz and Hoffman, and Bonifers play as a breakthrough center. With the characteristics of Real Madrid's current players, they cannot play in the 3421 formation. If Mendy and Carvajal were allowed to play two wingbacks, Vinicius and Rodrigo would lose their position, and Mbappe was not the kind of center with fulcrum ability in Bonifers. Therefore, Alonso's usual tactical style is extremely incompatible with the current Real Madrid players. It’s not that Alonso doesn’t know how to use other formations and styles of play, but he is definitely not as familiar as his favorite 3421 formation. If the coach and the player have conflicts due to tactical issues, it will inevitably weaken the team's cohesion and lead to the players' performance on the court like a set of loose sand. Such a team will definitely not achieve good results. If there are no good results, the head coach will have to accept the fate of being dismissed.

Can Alonso withstand the pressure of Real Madrid?

Third, Alonso may not be able to withstand Real Madrid's high requirements and high pressure. Real Madrid has always been a club that has high requirements for the head coach, and they do not have enough patience for the head coach. The club management and fans not only require the head coach to lead the team to win the championship, but also require the beautiful football. In fact, this is a very contradictory question. If you play beautiful offensive football, even if you can often defeat your opponent with big scores, you may not be able to win the championship. If you play more conservative and pragmatic football, you will have a higher chance of winning the championship, but it will definitely not please the fans on the scene. Therefore, there are many big-name head coaches who are dismissed from Real Madrid due to ugly scenes, poor record or failure to win the championship. For example, Capello, who led Real Madrid to win the La Liga championship with a 1:0 ruling, was fired because of his conservative tactics and failed to play beautiful football. Camacho and Benitez lost the Real Madrid coach position in the short term due to poor record. Mourinho and Ancelotti, two top football coaches, once resigned in disgrace because they led Real Madrid to lose all four major players. Therefore, although becoming Real Madrid's head coach is a huge success and glory, the enormous pressure that comes with it is unmatched by non-top giant teams like Leverkusen. So can Alonso withstand this pressure? There is a high probability that it cannot be.

How long can Xavi Alonso coach at Real Madrid?

The above three disadvantages are objective. If Alonso cannot handle any of them well, his position as coach in Real Madrid will be in danger, and he may even be dismissed in a sad way in less than a season.
