November 2 News Manchester United legend Rooney recently questioned Liverpool captain Van Dijk. Rooney said: "Van Dijk and Salah signed new contracts, but I feel that they have not shown leadership this season." After the victory over Villa, Van Dijk responded.

He said: "I didn't hear his voice last year, which honestly doesn't hurt me. Obviously, he is a legend, a great player, inspired a lot of people, and I can only give him positive comments.

"But I think this comment is slightly irresponsible, and of course this is just my personal opinion. It's easy to blame a veteran, but he knows as well as anyone that we're still working with the team to try and help everyone out. Like I said, you don't hear that when things are going well for the team and that's just the truth.

"Commentators need to do their job, that's it, he expresses his opinion and we have to accept it. By the way, I don't have any dissatisfaction, I don't take it personally at all. On the contrary, I think it is very interesting, right?

"Because we didn't hear any criticism last season, because we played well at that time and were naturally regarded as the leaders. And now this season, especially the past few weeks when things have been less than ideal, people are starting to question whether we're doing our job.

"This is life, we feel a great responsibility and want to lead by example. Of course, I can only speak for myself in this situation, I am the captain and I know that if we don't get good results or perform poorly, then there will definitely be questions for myself and the coach, which is what will inevitably follow.

"I certainly hope to play at a high level, not only for myself, but also for the team and the club. That's what I've been doing all these years. I want to win and I'm lucky to win so many games with the club, especially at home. I will also try my best to help my teammates in difficult moments, hoping to get the best out of them. When things don't go your way, a lot of people question it, and that's the world we live in.

"We have lost 6 of the past 7 games. Yes, in today's era everyone can speak freely, and these remarks will be amplified. I have said before that everyone must unite and focus on winning future games. This is the only thing we can control. It's certainly not easy, but I'm mature enough and I've got a lot of stability in my life so I can do it.

"I've heard the chants from the fans for Slott and I've heard the reports that he's under pressure, but I don't think we're a club that takes decisions lightly. We all feel it, and I'm sure you all agree, and we can get out of this together. This is not a guarantee, but we can get there by working together. As long as we believe in ourselves, stay humble and keep working hard, I feel like we can do it and everyone has confidence in it.

"The team must keep moving forward. You never know what will happen in the future. This is football and life. We will be united and the team has no doubts about this. This is a team matter and everyone has to perform at their best to win the game. Today we played very solidly and got the three points we deserve. Now we have to regain our strength and then concentrate on preparing for the game against Real Madrid."
