Butler was born in Houston, Texas, USA on September 14, 1989. In the 2011 NBA draft, Butler was selected by the Bulls with the 30th pick in the first round. He has played for the Bulls, Timberwolves, 76ers, Heat and Warriors so far. Butler was elected the fastest-progressive player in the 2014-15 season, won the NBA steals king in the 2020-21 season, was selected into the NBA All-Star lineup 6 times, was selected into the NBA All-Star team 2 times, was selected into the NBA All-Star team 2 times, was selected into the NBA All-Star team 3 times, and was selected into the NBA All-Star team 5 times.

In the 2022-23 season, Butler led the Heat to the Finals, making the team the sixth team in NBA history to perform the "Black Eight Miracle", the second Black Eight team to enter the Finals, and the first play-off team to enter the Finals. Butler also won the MVP of the 2022-23 NBA Eastern Conference Finals for his outstanding performance. On February 6, 2025, Butler joined the Warriors in a multi-party trade and agreed to renew a new two-year, worth $111 million contract with the Warriors.

So far in his career, Butler has played in a total of 869 games, scoring 15,898 points, averaging 18.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game, with a shooting percentage of 47.2/32.8/84.3% in three events.
